HWA objects to Sainsbury's signage planning application

HWA objects to Sainsbury's signage planning application

The Hampton Wick Association has formally objected to the J Sainsbury application for installation of illuminated signage, projecting signage, welcome signage etc.to their planned store on Hampton Wick High Street. The HWA believes that the signage is too dominant and inappropriate and would disturb neighbours living opposite.

Objections are permitted until October 16th (if you received notification by mail) or October 25th if you were notified via onsite advertisement or sign onsite or otherwise.

The wording of the HWA objection is as below.

————————-
After a site visit by the Hampton Wick Association’s Architect and after reviewing the application, we object to
the proposals made for the following reasons:
1. The signage as proposed is too dominant for a residential area and constitutes inappropriate advertising. The signage
would detract from the character of this Building of Townscape Merit (83/02373/BTM) in this Conservation Area.
2. ANY FORM OF ILLUMINATED SIGNAGE, WHATSOEVER, IS NOT APPROPRIATE as this part of Hampton Wick
High Street is a residential area. There are no illuminated signs to the three other businesses in this row. The Dapper Fox
(barber) has an illuminated ‘barbers’ pole’, but it is not in use.
3. The signage as proposed could disturb the neighbours opposite, particularly as the proposed lighting level of 375 cd/m²
is high for a residential area. The lighting operating hours are not stated in the application.
4. Projecting signs should be limited to one. This is as advised in LBRuT’s Supplementary Planning Document Shopfronts,
which was adopted March 2010
