War Memorial vandalised

Wreaths scattered at the War Memorial
On Friday 5th December, an HWA committee member was passing the Memorial Garden and saw that someone had vandalised it, viciously scattering the wreaths that had been laid on Remembrance Sunday less than a month previously. She tidied the wreaths but was not equipped to handle or dispose of the broken glass at the scene.
The HWA then notified both the Council and the police.
We cannot help but think that this awful, disrespectful crime has been made more likely by the Council’s policy of leaving the gate to the Memorial Garden unlocked at night. We have reports of rough sleepers there, although this vandalism could have been caused by anyone passing by and looking for trouble.
We call upon the Council to re-think its policy and to revert to locking the Memorial Garden at night.
For now, the wreaths have been restored. Please keep a watchful eye on them and report any problems to the police and the Council.
